The 5% Letter — 004

Make 5% your 100%

Hi friend,

last Saturday was the W. Your why. I asked you to find the reason underneath the goal, the one that has nothing to do with the goal itself, and put it into a single line.

Today, the I — Inner Belief. Believing you can, before you have the proof.

It was after eleven at night. February. A small rented room in Innsbruck, the heater ticking in the corner.

My eyes were burning. My back hurt. I had slept maybe five hours a night for a week. In front of me, a math book. Integrals. Calculus, after eight hours of pulling cable on a construction site.

I closed the book and sat there. Empty. And a thought arrived, fully formed. I can't do this. I am not going to make it.

Let me back up.

A few years earlier, at seventeen, I had walked out of school. I thought I was too dumb for it. Some people around me had a phrase for what I was doing. He is throwing his life away.

I had no proof they were wrong. None. What I had was a plan that sounded insane. Electrician by day. Evening school for the Matura at night. Water polo training on top. Three things at once, on five hours of sleep. And one goal underneath all of it, still years away: to study law. No evidence any of it would hold. Less than 5% success rate.

So on that February night, with the book closed and my eyes burning, the honest answer to "can you actually do this" was simple. I did not know. I had no proof.

It took me years to understand what I know now:

You almost never get the proof first.

I opened the book again. Not because I felt strong. I felt finished. I opened it because of something more stubborn than strength. A flat, irrational refusal to stop. One problem. Then the next. Then the next.

That is what inner belief actually is. Not confidence. Not a feeling that it will work out. It is a decision you make before the evidence exists, and then keep making, one problem at a time, until one day the evidence catches up to you.

Five years after I walked out of school, I stood in front of the University of Innsbruck with a place to study law. From "too dumb for school" to law student. The proof arrived. Five years late. Built out of a thousand nights like that one.

You cannot control whether you have the proof yet. That is the 95%. What people said. What you have or have not done. The evidence that is not there.

You can control the next step you take believing. That is the 5%. Belief is not what you feel after you win. It is what you decide before you have any right to.

And here is that exact thing, happening to me as I write this.

On Monday I crashed and hurt my right shoulder. For a few days I had no proof it was not serious. Just a shoulder I could barely move, and the fear, right in the middle of preparing for the swim.

So I did the only thing I know. I paced the setback instead of spiraling, and kept preparing the parts I still could. Before I had any proof it would be worth it.

The scan came back yesterday. Nothing torn. Ligaments and tendons all fine. The one thing still lit up is my biceps tendon, and it is not even from the crash. It is left over from the overload of Lago Maggiore, 61 kilometers the body has not fully forgotten. I rest until Saturday. Today I am back in the water.

I did not have that proof when I needed it most. I had to believe first, and pace the days until the proof caught up. Same as Innsbruck. Same as the swim you are training for.

Quick reminder, in case you are new here. On the 22nd of August we all get in the water for the Community Swim on the same day. Any distance, ten meters or ten kilometers, whatever is yours. It is for NF Kinder. These four letters, SWIM, one a week, are how we get the mind ready. Last week, your why. This week, your belief.

You may have no proof you can swim your distance on the 22nd. Good. Nobody has proof of the thing they have not done yet. Believe first. Build the proof on the day.

This week's experiment: write your one sentence of belief.

Not "I hope." Not "maybe." That is the 95% talking. Write it as "I believe..." or "I know...". One line. "I can do hard things." "I finish what I start." Whatever is true for you before it is proven true.

Then say it out loud every morning this week. Especially on the morning you would rather not. Out loud, in your own voice, before the proof.

Next Saturday, the M. Momentum. The people who carry you when you cannot carry yourself.

You will not have the proof before you start. That is exactly what belief is for.

All the best

Bernhard

Bernhard Hengl. 36 kilometers. Küssnacht to Flüelen. One week from today

Hi friend, one week from today, I start. 36 kilometers across Lake Lucerne. Küssnacht to Flüelen. Solo, no wetsuit, no sleep (fine, it's not a 24h swim, but it sounds hard), no touching land, from the first stroke to the last. Around 12 hours in the water. Lake five of the Alpine Seven. Every kilometer for NF Kinder. The forecast right now is cold, with almost no wind. In open water, wind is what ends a swim before it begins. So as of today, it is a go. But I will be honest with you. I am...

How to Cross an Impossible Distance

Make 5% your 100% Hi friend, last Saturday, we swam. 20 kilometers through the Danube, under 20 of Vienna’s bridges, with my friend Johannes. And then the messages (mails, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook...) started coming in. Swimmers and especially people who do not swim, who have never called themselves swimmers, wrote to tell me they got in the water that day too. A lake near them. A pool. The sea. They saw us go... ähmm... swim, and they went. Because of them, NF got heard. Radio....

Today We All Swim. Ten Meters Counts.

Make 5% your 100% Hi friend, last Saturday was the M. Momentum. The people who get in the boat with you. That was the last of the four. S, W, I, M. The whole arc. Today, none of it is on paper anymore. Today is the 22nd. Today we swim. My shoulder has been hurting for weeks. It still is. This week I swam anyway. 6.7 kilometers one day. 6 the next with a shoulder that would not stop complaining the whole way. And 20 are planned for today. But Why? A faster time does nothing for me. Another...
